Modality

Modality describes how interpretation is delivered. The suitable format depends on participant preference, the conversation, privacy, access, qualifications, and the equipment or location available.

Choose a format for the assignment

In-person interpretation places the interpreter at the shared location. External video connects participants across locations and requires a reliable connection, clear sound, and appropriate camera placement. Each arrangement has practical strengths and constraints; neither is automatically best for every conversation.

Ask the person who will use interpretation about access preferences, including sight lines and visual needs for sign language. Consider how many people will speak, the privacy of each location, materials that must be seen, and a backup plan if video fails. Confirm what the organization permits and what the interpreter can provide.

A format should be named clearly in the request and accepted terms. Lingfaro currently coordinates scheduled in-person and external video sessions in Minnesota. The modality alone does not establish language fit, credentials, or legal suitability.
