Interpreting glossary

Interpreting terms can mean different things across organizations and settings. These short definitions provide a starting point; confirm a term’s specific meaning when it affects a service request or decision.

Language and communication

  • Language and dialect: the language variety a person prefers and uses; ask rather than assume.
  • ASL: American Sign Language, a distinct language with its own grammar and structure.
  • Modality: the format used for interpretation, such as in-person or video.

Session and record terms

  • Session record: documentation of details about an interpreting assignment.
  • Attestation: a confirmation about a session detail, such as whether a session occurred or its recorded duration.
  • External video: a video service outside the Lingfaro site used for a scheduled interpreting session.

Use terms in context

Ask participants what language and communication approach they prefer. Ask the responsible organization which qualifications and documentation apply to its setting.

A glossary can explain words, but it cannot determine an individual’s legal rights, clinical needs, or an organization’s compliance obligations.
