Interpreting for healthcare

Clear communication helps patients and care teams take part in the same conversation. Lingfaro supports scheduled interpreting for Minnesota healthcare settings, with the language, dialect, specialty, and format discussed as part of planning.

Plan around the encounter

Healthcare teams may need language support for clinic visits, care planning, behavioral health conversations, or follow-up appointments. When arranging a session, describe the kind of encounter and what participants need to communicate, without adding patient identifiers to a general request.

For sensitive or complex discussions, consider whether everyone can hear and see one another clearly and whether an interpreter should be present in the room. The right arrangement depends on the people, setting, and conversation.

Name the language and dialect

A language label alone may not be enough. Ask the patient which language and dialect they prefer, and include that preference in the request. Use the description the person gives you; a broad language category can leave important differences unstated.

Share relevant subject context so an interpreter can assess whether the assignment fits their experience. Avoid sending names, dates of birth, medical record numbers, or other sensitive details in a scheduling brief.

Prepare the room and participants

Allow time for introductions, explain who is present, and speak directly to the patient. Use short, complete thoughts and pause regularly so each person can follow the exchange. Leave room for questions and clarification.

After the session, review the session record and resolve any questions about what took place before payment.
