Interpreting for schools

Families need a meaningful opportunity to understand school discussions and share their perspective. Lingfaro supports scheduled interpretation for Minnesota education settings, including meetings where families and staff need to discuss a student’s learning or support.

Common school conversations

Schools may arrange interpretation for family conferences, planning meetings, evaluations, or conversations about a student’s needs. Tell the interpreter the type of meeting and its general subject so they can consider fit and preparation.

Invite the family to identify their preferred language and dialect. Confirm who will attend, the expected length, and whether the meeting will be in person or by an external video service.

Make space for family participation

Share an agenda or relevant non-sensitive materials in advance when possible. During the meeting, speak to the family member directly, explain school-specific terms, and pause often for interpretation and questions.

For a video session, arrange the screen so the interpreter and participants can see one another. For an in-person meeting, choose seating that supports direct conversation and gives everyone a clear view.

Close the loop

Before the meeting ends, summarize next steps in plain language and check that participants know who will follow up. Keep student records in the school’s authorized systems rather than placing private details in a general scheduling note.

Review the session record after the meeting and raise any questions before the session is finalized for payment.

Let’s plan the conversation.
